We’re actively monitoring safety of GM crops, says Asagbara

The Director General, National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Agnes Asagbra, has disclosed that the agency is leveraging on safety of Genetically Modified (GM) crops through a comprehensive Post-Release Monitoring (PRM) framework to safeguard the health of the citizens.

Asagbra stated this during a stakeholder’s meeting to discuss the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for PRM of GM crops, particularly, TELA Maize in Abuja.

She highlighted the agency’s regulatory responsibilities, emphasising that the importance of monitoring of such crops’ post-commercialisation cannot be overstressed.

Asagbara declared that every innovation comes with responsible regulation, adding that the agency must ensure that the crops, now planted by farmers nationwide, yield the intended results, and are safe for human health, and biodiversity.

The Director General, therefore, said the environment is very important, while post-release monitoring is not just a regulatory requirement but also a scientific and ethical obligation.

Also, the Acting Director, Biosafety Enforcement and Operations, Mrs. Hauwa Tahir, outlined the objectives of the meeting, stating that the agency seeks to understand the experiences of farmers, assess the performance of GM crops, and identify any challenges post-commercialisation

Tahir explained: “This process is critical in ensuring the long-term safety and effectiveness of genetically modified technology in our agricultural sector.”

The experts discussions centered on the draft SOPs and proposed enhancements to strengthen the PRM framework, while the agency reaffirmed its open-door policy, encouraging collaboration and input from stakeholders to ensure a robust monitoring system.
