Senator Ngwu hails Enugu Air launch, says it’ll boost economic growth

Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, has described the launch of Enugu Air as a strategic initiative that will contribute significantly to the economic revitalisation of Enugu State.

Speaking on the inaugural flight which took place on Monday, July 7, 2025, Ngwu noted that Enugu Air becomes the second state-owned airline in Nigeria, following Akwa Ibom’s Ibom Air, and reflects what he termed Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to “opening up Enugu for business.”

“This is another important milestone achieved by the government of His Excellency Peter Mbah towards generating employment, attracting investment, and integrating Enugu into the broader network of economic activities in the country,” Ngwu said in a statement.

The senator also pointed to the career opportunities the airline would create for young people across sectors such as aviation, logistics, tourism, and hospitality. He referenced earlier remarks by Governor Mbah that the airline would offer clear career paths for the state’s youth.

Highlighting the wider economic framework, Ngwu said the launch of Enugu Air is part of a broader strategy expected to generate over 20,000 jobs. These include roles in bus rapid transit services, taxi operations, airport logistics, ride-hailing services, and related sectors.

He praised the operational model of the airline, which begins with a fleet of three Embraer jets from the E170 and E190 series. The fleet is expected to service regional routes connecting Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos, with expansion plans to other Nigerian cities including Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, and Kano.

Senator Ngwu concluded by stating that initiatives like Enugu Air could help reposition the state as a key player in Nigeria’s transportation and investment landscape.
