LECTURERS representing geoscience departments of thirty Nigerian universities completed a workshop in sequence stratigraphy in Lagos last week.

The five-day intensive course on “Sequence Stratigraphic Concepts and Principles” was organized through collaborative efforts between the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), Africa Region and ExxonMobil Nigeria.

The workshop was delivered by Dr. Gary Hampson, professor of Sedimentary Geology at the department of Earth Science and Engineering, Imperial College London.

The course was designed to assist in building geoscience capacity in Nigerian universities through lecturer training. Commenting at the end of the event, General Manager Operations Technical Geoscience at ExxonMobil, Andrew Ejayeriese spoke about ExxonMobil’s continued efforts in building geoscience technical capacity at Nigerian universities through several initiatives under the university assistance program, (UAP) of ExxonMobil.

In this collaborative effort between AAPG Africa and ExxonMobil, Vice President AAPG Africa Region, Femi Esan stated that AAPG’s goal are to advance the science of geology particularly as it relates to hydrocarbon exploration and production and promote the research and technological innovation required to efficiently produce energy resources in an environmentally sustainable manner.
