CBN pledges efficient banking services in two states

THE Jos branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that it would provide efficient and effective central banking services to its stakeholders in Plateau and Nasarawa states.

This commitment was disclosed at the weekend by the Acting Controller, CBN Jos Branch, Hajiya Khadijat Kassim, during the 2009 Jos Bankers’ Clearing House Award held at the Crest Hotel, Jos.

Kassim, who doubles as the chairperson of the Jos Bankers’ clearing House, explained that year 2009 had been a success in the banking industry in Plateau and Nasarawa states. She said some banks in the clearing zone had distinguished themselves in the pursuit of excellence.

She disclosed that the CBN, in collaboration with the Federal Government, has led to the licensing of 900 micro-finance banks in the country as at the end of December last year. She also commended the existence of the 12 micro-finance banks in the state, adding that it is highly encouraging compared to some of the states of the federation and stressed that CBN would continue to sustain as well as introduce policy measures aimed at encouraging banks to participate in the scheme.

The governor of the state, Dr. Jonah Jang, in a goodwill message, commended Jos branch of CBN for contributing to the economic growth of the state. The governor was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Davou Mang.

Jang said that because of the exceptional performance of CBN branch in Jos, the government associates itself with CBN, with all commercial banks and with all Bureau de Change in the state as they have contributed immensely to the realisation of the 10-point agenda of the government of Plateau.

The 2009 Jos Bankers’ Clearing House was preceded by an award to individuals and commercial banks who distinguished themselves in various banking services. Some of the recipients of the awards felt elated and happy and thanked their employers and the CBN for recognising their contributions.
