The Renewed Hope Labourers Network (RHLN) has described the appointment of Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of Finance as a sign of what it called adaptive and performance-driven leadership by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Godwin Onwe, the group said the move reflects a pragmatic approach to economic management, particularly at a time of mounting fiscal pressures.
The group likened the President’s decision to that of a seasoned coach introducing fresh energy into a struggling team, arguing that leadership requires periodic reassessment and repositioning.
“The appointment of Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of Finance is a bold and strategic decision. It reflects President Tinubu’s capacity to reassess performance and reposition his economic team in line with national priorities,” the statement said.
According to the group, such an approach underscores a governance style anchored on results, accountability and flexibility.
RHLN said Nigeria’s economic challenges demand a mix of technical competence and policy depth, particularly in taxation, revenue mobilisation and fiscal governance.
It highlighted Oyedele’s background as a tax and fiscal policy expert, noting his previous role at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he served as Partner and West Africa Tax Leader.
The group also referenced his role as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led efforts to design proposals aimed at simplifying Nigeria’s tax system and improving compliance.
“Taiwo Oyedele is a globally respected fiscal policy expert with deep experience in tax reform and public finance. His track record shows capacity to design systems that are efficient and growth-oriented,” Onwe said.
The group said Oyedele’s reform philosophy aligns with broader efforts to build a more inclusive economy, particularly for small businesses and low-income earners.
It noted that his approach seeks to broaden the tax base without placing disproportionate pressure on vulnerable segments of the population, while improving efficiency in revenue collection.
“This appointment should be seen as part of a broader effort to build a more equitable fiscal system—one that promotes compliance and ensures that growth translates into tangible benefits,” the statement added.
RHLN urged stakeholders across political and economic sectors to support ongoing reforms, stressing that fiscal transformation requires cooperation and sustained commitment.
“At a time when Nigeria is navigating complex economic pressures, it is important to support leadership decisions aimed at strengthening institutions and improving revenue generation,” Onwe said.
The group expressed confidence that Oyedele’s expertise would contribute to reshaping Nigeria’s fiscal framework, describing the appointment as a strategic step towards long-term economic stability.
