• Says Tribunal to commence sitting soon

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), said it will focus more on robust enforcement of the rights of Nigerian consumers to enable them derive more value for their money come 2020.

It will also ensure speedy realisation of the proposed FCCPC Tribunal that will give full legal backing to consumers that have been shabbily treated in claiming their rights and be well compensated.

The FCCPC is the apex consumer protection agency in Nigeria, established to improve the well-being of the people..
President Muhammadu Buhari on January 30th, signed the amendment bill into law changing it status from the former Consumer Protection Council (CPC) to FCCPC

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera, disclosed this yesterday, in Abuja, while briefing journalists on the Commission’s plans next year.He said, “In 2020, I want you, the Media, to come on a voyage with us to improve the mechanism of enforcing consumers’ rights in Nigeria.

“We should be focusing on a robust enforcement, wider consumer education; and if we can achieve these two better than before, we would put more smiles on the faces of Nigerian consumers, be able to rescue them from exploitation by service providers, production, distribution and manufacturing entities.”

He said the Commission will go all out to hold manufacturing, production and service providers accountable come next year, saying: “We would want to know how they respond to consumers’ complaints; we shall similarly device mechanisms and put them on their toes to satisfy customers better.”
He explained that in the past, the Commission was receiving over 1,000 complaints monthly, but after much effort in challenging the manufacturers, producers and services provider of consumer goods, such complaints have reduced astronomically.

He noted that the Commission’s focus is not to work on the products, but on the processes so that results will speak for themselves. He continued: “In 2020, we shall take a closer look at the manufacturing sector, beverage industries; we will look at them one by one and how they produce their goods, sell and how far they satisfy their consumers.”
