The United Arab Emirates and Nigeria are strengthening their bilateral ties to expand long-term trade, collaboration, regional integration and Investment flow into West Africa.
In line with efforts to elevate both countries economic engagement, the Dubai International Chamber inaugurated its representative office in Lagos, with the aim of strengthening UAE–Nigeria business ties and support Emirati companies seeking opportunities in West Africa.
Already, Nigeria is increasingly viewed as a strategic entry point for UAE trade and investment into West Africa, UAE has emerged as Nigeria’s most significant trading partner in the Gulf region.
In a statement made available to the media, non-oil trade between both countries has grown steadily in recent years, reaching an estimated $2.4 billion in 2022
Nigerian exports to the UAE stood at $520 million during the period, dominated by gold valued at $489 million, alongside spices worth $11.9 million and charcoal estimated at $7.24 million.
UAE exports to Nigeria in 2023 exceeded $1.61 billion, with refined oil accounting for $352 million, followed by broadcasting equipment valued at $159 million and automobiles worth $149 million.
Beyond trade, financial flows from the UAE to Nigeria have increased significantly, placing the UAE among the leading sources of foreign investment into Nigeria in recent years.
This growth trend has been reinforced by frequent trade missions and high-level delegations and high-level exchanges between the public and private sector representatives from both countries.
The statement further highlighted institutional cooperation anchored by a joint committee between both countries that plays a central role in advancing cooperation across political, economic, cultural, judicial, and security domains.
According to the statement, the committee is tasked with facilitating commercial and investment partnerships, promoting knowledge exchange and overseeing the effective implementation of bilateral agreements and protocols.
The statement further highlighted that the UAE Consulate General in Lagos, through its economic team, continues to champion initiatives that advance mutual trade and investment, while working closely with Nigerian institutions and private sector stakeholders to promote sustainable growth and strategic alignment.
As both countries look ahead, officials on both sides describe UAE–Nigeria relations as a model of cross-regional cooperation, driven by shared values, economic ambitions, and a commitment to long-term, inclusive development.
