. Govt laments power deficit in Nigeria
After experiencing a deficit of about 1,000mw in the last one month, Nigeria’s power supply has bounced back to 4,251.10 mega watts (mw) from the 3,373.18mw it recorded last week.

The Presidential Taskforce on Power stated in its generation report released at the weekend, that daily average energy generated has also increased from 3,408.87mw to 4,324.44mw.

According to the taskforce, total daily energy generated is now 103,786.59mw while total daily energy sent out stands at 102,026.39mw.

The country’s peak power generated remained the 4,810.70MW recorded on August 25, 2015.
Despite the tremendous improvements recorded in the power sector, President Mohammadu Buhari, said that the country is still far from meeting the electricity challenges in the country.

Buhari said in Abuja at the weekend, during the 5th Nigeria Alternative Energy Expo (NAEE) with the theme “Consolidating Energy Transformation Gains”, that there is still a substantial power deficit both in generating, transmitting and distributing adequate power to meet the actual needs of the country.

He said government is doing everything possible to attract massive investment in the power sector to ensure regular and steady electricity supply for a viable and sustainable development.

Buhari noted that with global investors looking closely at the energy opportunities in Nigeria, the government is committed to establishing a level playing ground, with encouraging policies and incentives. “We are also developing infrastructures to ensure environmental sustainability and internationally accepted standards to light up more homes and businesses with renewable energy”, he added.

He renewed government’s commitment towards the promotion of renewable energy programmes that will integrate the objectives of all, inclusive green economy and attract financing partners like development banks, international development agencies and other financial options for supporting the transition to a cleaner energy in Nigeria.

He stated: “This year’s gathering will also see the launch of the ‘G2020’ an initiative of the Nigeria Alternative Energy Expo (NAEE) supported by Government, private sector and other financiers responding to the urgent need of over 170 million Nigerians to embrace energy efficiency as a national culture for a sustainable future.
“The G2020 program is aimed at generating 20MW of Green Energy by the year 2020. The project plans to supply clean electricity to Homes, Schools, Health Centres and Police Stations in rural areas as a way of accelerating development across the nation. The programme will also offer technical training on green energy to the target participants and thus provide employment opportunities to our youth”.
