Experts to address issues with solid waste management in Nigeria 

Come November 1 and 2, at the Civic Centre in Lagos, experts in the field of solid waste management will gather to address issues confronting the sector.

The conference, which is being organised by Intermarc Consulting, provides an opportunity for professionals, researchers, government departments and local authorities to exchange ideas, information and discuss the work regarding the current situation in waste management and how best to achieve the objectives of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and other such policy frameworks that will translate to the achievement of the national and international declarations as well as sustainable development goals on the environment.

According to the Managing Director of Intermarc Consulting, Adeyinka Adeyemi, waste management is a growing industry in Nigeria as all stakeholders have consistently continued to worry on how to achieve a “Clean Nigeria” in a manner that is economically viable as a business.

As such, he said the objective of the conference is therefore how to ensure that Nigeria’s major cities are ranked among the cleanest cities in Africa.

According to him, the keynote speakers will be minister, Federal Ministry of Environment, Amina Mohammed, who will speak during the opening ceremony, alongside the Senior Special Adviser to the President on SDGs, Mrs. Orelope-Adefulire; Director-General, NESREA, Dr. Lawrence Anukam;
Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr. Bukar Hassan; Managing Director, Project Management office and Geocycle, Lafarge Africa plc, Mrs. Adepeju Adebayo, and Manager, PWC Nigeria, Mrs. Mories Atoki, among others.

Adeyemi said the objectives of the EPR are to reduce waste streams from post-consumer products; to provide clear and measurable targets in terms of prevention, reuse or recycling objectives; and to encourage manufacturing of environmentally friendly products by incorporating waste prevention, reuse and recycling considerations into product design.
