The Federal Government has inaugurated a Governing Committee for the implementation of E-Government Training Centres.

The committee is to come up with a framework, legal and regulatory instrument for the centres, expand the centre to every geo-political zones, to ensure that all federal workers are trained within their zones to reduce cost.

The Committee is co-chaired by the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, and Director-General, Galaxy Backbone Ltd., Prof Muhammad Abubakar, Inaugurating the panel, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, said the challenge is to ensure that all federal public servants are trained on e-Government.

He said the programme is part of digital economy, and is one of the eight pillars the Ministry is working on, to implement the digital economy policy and strategy for a digital Nigeria.

He observed that NITDA has been mandated by the NITDA Act 2007, to come up with a framework and regulatory instrument for e-Governance implementation, while the Galaxy Backbone will provide the required digital infrastructure for federal public institutions and e-governance implementation.

Pantami explained that the committee was set up to commenced the process and ensure sustainability of the centres, even as the Ministry will play the key role of supervision and ensure that things are on track.

Other Terms of reference are: the committee should meet from time to agree on what to be done; the committee has the responsibility to review and monitor operational procedures of the centre; ensure sustainability of the centre and develop strategy for attracting funding, collaborations and expanding the centre to every geo-political zones to ensure that all public servants are trained within their zones to reduce cost.

In his response Inuwa said the Committee will work with the Minister to make digital Nigeria a reality, adding that capacity building is a key for digital and knowledge-based economy, and stressed the need for all stakeholders to key into the strategy.

On his part, Abubakar said Nigeria cannot be left behind in the e-revolution, and therefore, Nigerians must be trained on how to use all the digital platforms.

He observed that the committee members are ready to discharge the duties given to them, and deliver on the terms of reference.
