The 2019 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) Audit Report was signed by Adolphus Aghughu, the Auditor-General for the Federation at the time.
The report noted that the payments lacked the necessary documentation, which did not support these payments and may have violated the country’s Public Procurement Act.
The Auditor-General also found that over N100 billion could not be accounted for in the Federal Government’s 2019 financial statements.
This suggests that the funds may have been misused or stolen.
The Auditor-General found that the Federal Government has weak internal controls, making preventing and detecting fraud difficult.
Some other highlights and recommendations from the 2019 Federal Government Audit Report include its finding that the Federal Government’s revenue collection efforts were weak, resulting in a significant revenue shortfall.
The Auditor-General recommended that the government improve its revenue collection efforts by expanding the tax base, streamlining tax administration processes, and cracking down on tax evasion.
The report also found that the Federal Government’s expenditure on non-essential items was excessive.
The Auditor-General recommended that the government reduce its expenditure on non-essential items and focus on spending on essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
The report also found that the Federal Government’s debt stock was rising rapidly.
The Auditor-General recommended that the government develop a comprehensive debt management strategy to ensure its debt is sustainable.
