Academic activities have been shut indefinitely by the authorities of Akperan Orshi College of Agriculture, Yandev, Benue State, as students protest over “outrageous” increment in their tuition fees.

The Guardian gathered that the students’ unrest, which started on Wednesday at about 10am, with the blockage of all the entrance to the school, paralysed activities.

The college in a circular with Ref. No. AOCAY/REG/OFF-28/1/** titled “Closure of School” and signed by the Rector, Dr. Samuel Ahemen, asked the students to vacate the premises immediately.

Part of the circular read: “Due to the protest by students of Akperan Orshi College of Agriculture, Yandev (AOCAY), over the directives to implement the 2015 revenue law as it affects payment of school fee, management has decided to close the college indefinitely with immediate effect”.

The Guardian gathered that the decision to increase the fees was not made known to the students until the students were about to start their first semester examinations.

The announcement of the increment by the Rector showed that the state’s Ministry of Education raised the tuition from N25,000 to N45,000.

The students were all over the school chanting protest songs, while others moved to the expressway from Yandev near Gboko to Katsina-Ala, where they blocked and made burn fire, which obstructed the free flow of traffic for hours.
