Dangote Cement begins operations in Côte d’Ivoire, targets local growth, jobs

Dangote Cement has commenced full operations in Côte d’Ivoire with the official opening of its new cement plant in Attingué, about 30 kilometres from Abidjan.

The Managing Director of Dangote Cement Côte d’Ivoire, Serge Gbotta, announced the development at a launch event held at the Novotel Abidjan-Marcory, describing the project as “a symbol of confidence in the future of Côte d’Ivoire.”

Built on 50 hectares, the Attingué plant has an annual production capacity of three million tonnes of cement. The project, estimated at 100 billion CFA francs, makes Côte d’Ivoire the 11th African country to host a Dangote Cement facility.

“Our ambition is clear: to offer Ivorians internationally-standard cement, produced locally, at a competitive price,” said Gbotta. “The Attingué plant is not just an industrial unit; it represents our commitment to sustainable development and to supporting local communities.”
The company said the facility is expected to create more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, benefiting young professionals and small businesses involved in logistics, construction, and supply services.

Commercial Director Stéphane Tchimou said the plant would help stabilise cement availability and support local contractors.

“We know that Ivorian masons, craftsmen, and contractors need reliable, high-performance cement that is available without interruption,” he said. “Our distribution network will ensure accessibility in all regions.”

He added that Dangote Cement plans to introduce credit facilities and business support schemes for small retailers.
The company also announced plans for community projects around Attingué, including the construction of access roads, water supply systems, and support for local healthcare services.
Founder Aliko Dangote said the company’s expansion into Côte d’Ivoire reflects its belief in Africa’s potential.

“The risks in Africa are often exaggerated. In reality, this continent is full of opportunities. Our role is to tell a new story — one of an Africa that produces, innovates, and builds for its children,” he stated.

Dangote Cement’s Ivorian operation is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on cement imports and position it as a regional hub for production and export within West Africa.
