Available statistics show that average consumption of eggs, a poultry product, in Nigeria as at 2020 was approximated at 78.48 eggs per person annually and when compared with the 285.50 eggs/person/annum in the United States of America and 128.2 eggs/person/annum in South Africa, this figure is abysmally low. As the cost of eggs continue to rapidly rise, this number is set to drop even more.

However, he said Nigeria’s egg consumption is set to reach 600,000 metric tons by 2026 which translates to an increase of 0.2 per cent year-on-year from 596,000 metric tons in 2021.

Further checks show that the global consumption of poultry and livestock products is expected to double over the next decade and Adelayo said meeting such huge demand in a country with a population of over 200 million means that more poultry processes must be automated.
