FrieslandCampina WAMCO has launched its zero-waste initiative during the 2024 Global Sustainability Week which was held recently. Commissioned by the Deputy Governor, Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, who was represented by Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mosopefolu George, he underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving zero waste goals which aligns with Lagos State’s circular economy and sustainability objectives.

The state’s objective also represents the dairy company’s commitment to balancing nutrition with environmental responsibility, marking the start of a comprehensive, two-phase approach to waste reduction. Phase one will focus on reducing post-production waste sent to landfills while phase two will address recovery of post-consumer waste.   Through this initiative, the company aims to set a benchmark in Nigeria’s dairy sector by implementing a circular waste management model that enhances resource efficiency and minimises environmental impact.

Speaking, Hamzat commended the company for its proactive approach to sustainability and its alignment with the state’s waste management strategies. “By reducing waste and promoting recycling, this company is not only supporting our waste management goals but also setting a commendable example in Nigeria’s food and beverage industry.”

Managing Director, FrieslandCampina WAMCO, Roger Adou stated that they remain committed to preserving the environment, adding that the initiative is a testament to the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

“This initiative complements our broader global goal of achieving climate neutrality and circular operations by 2050, with a specific target of zero waste to landfill by 2030.”

Deputy Director of Circular Economy, Jirinsola Olaleye, who represented the Managing Director of Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, highlighted some of the initiatives undertaken by LAWMA to achieve zero waste and commended the company for joining forces in the reduction of waste in the state.

Also speaking, Executive Director, FrieslandCampina WAMCO, Oreoluwa Famurewa, added that they recognise the need to address environmental challenges and the initiative is a proactive step towards a sustainable future, not only within their operations but in Lagos and Nigeria at large. “We’re grateful for the partnership with the Lagos State Government, whose support is pivotal in helping us achieve a circular economy in Nigeria,” she said.
