Lagos residents yesterday berated the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, over N2 billion worth of donor request to bring relief to victims of Sunday’s gas explosion in the state.

Lagos residents yesterday berated the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, over N2 billion worth of donor request to bring relief to victims of Sunday’s gas explosion in the state.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed his plan to go cap in hand for the victims when he visited the scene of the explosion. The approach was, however, flayed by many on the social media, as they demand better succour for families who lost lives and properties in the disaster.

The governor hinted that the state had already committed N250 million to the relief fund, which will be chaired by the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat. He said the incident was beyond what the State government could independently manage. He called on well-meaning members of the society to join the state to salvage the situation.

To this end, the government gave out three account details for people to support the victims. The details include, Account name: Abule Ado Emergency Relief Fund, Guaranty Trust Bank, 0568615688, Polaris Bank, 4030017510 and Zenith Bank, 1017184516.

However, Nigerians have taken to social media to criticise the government, stating that it is the duty of the government to provide succour for disaster victims and not solicit for funds from citizens to salvage the situation.

The citizens, who took to twitter shortly after the governor’s visit to Abule-Ado, accused government of crowd funding.
@ulsherlan in a response to the governor said: “I would have contributed mine but my transport cost has gone up 300 per cent ever since you banned Keke and Okada in Lagos state. Thank you sir. ”

Asegun Tolu Adekolu, @ToluAdekolu said: “The government shouldn’t be asking for donations. This is nonsense. We pay taxes!!! Non Government Organisations (NGOs) may do so but not the state government.”

@architectsunepa, inquired: “What about money gotten from toll fees? NURTW collections and also several taxes imposed on the citizens by Lagos state government?”

@Opemssssss said: “Why is the state government crowd funding? In Lagos where taxes are aggressively collected sef.”

@OchuRasheed said: “They have money in store and they are demanding from the citizens they have impoverished again.. arrghh!!! Why are these people heartless? His father “Tinubu” would give out N5B in a blink of an eye. He should go meet him.”

Samuel Onemu @efeoghene4god, said: “It’s so easy to release billions for SUVs but difficult to release money for emergency relief right?”

According to him, politicians think we are fools. They know how to tax, chase businesses away yet try avoid responsibilities.

“They don’t really care. Just survive and avoid getting into their trouble. They don’t really care about us.”

@okeyjames said: “Sanwo-Olu as the constitutional number one citizen of Lagos state, please tell us how much you are personally contributing to encourage us to contribute. The 250 million is still our money. Thank you as you comply sir.”

@PeppersoupWorld said: “My transport has increased by five per cent because I now use Uber to places Keke would have taken me for 100 naira. So the money I would have donated has gone for transport. I still pray that all affected find healing and strength in this trying time.”

For @Lucasscot_101, he said: “Which people are gonna donate?! The ones u took away their livelihood via Okada ban, or the ones that had to trek long distance just to get to work b4 9am and return by 10pm?”
