It’s a great feat for nation, says Bala-Usman

The Federal Government yesterday expressed delight as the Nigeria’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Dikko Tahir Bala emerges the Chairman of International Mobile Satellite (IMSO).

Bala, who was unanimously elected after an election was conducted during the 24th Assembly of the body in London yesterday, will occupy the prestigious position for two consecutive years.

The Head of Nigerian Delegation to the International body, Ms Hadiza Bala Usman, commended Bala for new position, expressing her optimism that he will bring his wealth of experience to bear in IMSO.

Usman, who is also the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority ( NPA) said the election was a big achievement for Nigeria in particular and Africa in general.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, the NPA’s boss assured the Assembly that Nigeria and all other member states would be fully committed to the work of IMSO while ensuring that the international organisation succeeds in all its programmes.

She expressed her optimism that the new satellite technologies will ensure safety and security of life at sea.Usman however, thanked the delegates from all member states for their support and trust in appointing a distinguished Nigerian as the Chairman.

She also assured the delegates that the Assembly would be run by the new Chairman in the best interest of the body and all concerned.
The new Chairman, she said, “is hardworking and have never been found wanting in the execution of his mandate.”

She also commended the Directorate of the Assembly for always willing to support the member states despite its limited resources.Usman therefore, called on the new Chairman to always ensure that the Directorate is properly resourced and motivated to achieve its desired results.

“Always remember that the primary responsibility of IMSO is ensuring that lives are continuously being saved within the maritime domain, among others”, Usman said.
