Nigerian scholar joins World Bank/IMF meetings on global development

Nigerian scholar Dr. Ololade Omosunlade, a Tobias Scholar, has joined world leaders, policymakers, and development experts at the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings in Washington, DC, USA.

The annual meetings, held from April 21 to 26 under the theme “Jobs: The Path to Prosperity,” bring together heads of state, finance ministers, central bank governors, business executives, and civil society leaders to deliberate on global economic and development policies.

Dr. Omosunlade, who holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Ibadan and a Master of Public Affairs from Indiana University Bloomington, described the experience as “transformative both professionally and personally.”

“I am honoured to have represented the Tobias Scholars at such a significant convening,” she said. “The meetings offer a rare opportunity to engage directly with policymakers, learn from international development practitioners, and reflect on how global strategies can be adapted to address local realities. The lessons I gain will continue to shape my work in advancing education equity and sustainable community development.”

According to the scholar, four key takeaways from her participation are that access to meaningful work and education represent both opportunity and dignity; that cross-sector partnerships are vital for driving equitable and sustainable change; that evidence-based policymaking is crucial for fairness and accountability; and that behind every statistic lies a human story, reminding policymakers to design initiatives that uplift marginalised communities.

Her selection as a Tobias Scholar, a highly competitive program that annually chooses a select cohort to represent Indiana University, underscores her rising profile as a global thought leader.

She said the recognition highlights her dedication to translating research and policy into tangible actions that expand educational opportunities, promote equity, and empower communities worldwide.
