The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Central Bank of Nigeria( CBN), will embark on nationwide Sensitisation campaign to curb the abuse of Nigeria’s currencies.

The NOA Director in Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Danchadi, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Saturday.

“The nation’s currencies are part of our national symbols and it is regrettable that they are grossly abused in a myriad of obnoxious ways.

”These include mutilating them and spraying them during ceremonies, thereby marching on them.

”These also include putting them in parts of the body where they are not supposed to be kept,” he said.

The NOA Director further said that the currencies should be patriotically respected by both Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike.

According to him, all Nigerians must respect the currencies because they are part our national symbols.

He said the joint campaign by NOA and the apex bank was therefore to urgently reverse the ugly trend.

This is a good way to end the recession. If Nigerians can br decent enough to respect the Naira, it will appreciate against the Dollar and Sterling. It is because we do not respect our currency that we are where we are today.

It is only what has value that is respected.

How? Does value appear out of thin air? Me i think that it is what has been respected that gains value.

Every asset has value in itself, the reason it is called asset. Money including the Naira is not an asset but an acceptable legal tender or instrument, for the exchange of goods and services as well as a measure of value. Respecting (handling properly) the Naira does not in any way confer value on it. Its value comes from the productive economic activities within the country. For example the continued importation of the finished products of crude oil into the country is an unproductive economic activity that continues to strip the Naira of value which results in its poor handing and being abused. But if we refine our crude oil to meet local consumption and the excess exported this is productive economic activity that will give the Naira value, and result in it being handled properly. Thus such campaigns are unproductive economic activities meant to siphon money which will result in the Naira losing value and being handled poorly and abused.

This your sophisticated explanation will only serve to reduce the value of the Naira. Already, I am lost. Keep it simple na….

My brother my submission is simplified. Read it again, if possible read it up to three times and you will understand it.

          • Author’s gravatar

3 times!!! I have read it 15 times and still need clarification. Remember that communication is only complete when the receiver understands. Or are you saying you don’t understand that I don’t understand???

“…if salt losses its saltiness men throw it on the floor and trample on it”. These campaigns are fraudulent and corrupt, and contribute to the Naira losing value. The abuse of the Naira is proof of its worth as Nigeria is not productive. The only way for it to be productive is for government to hands off the economy through privatization and liberalization through the NSE (Nigeria Stock Exchange) by way of IPO (Initial Public Offer).

What about hawking the Naira like plantain chips outside every social function. Is that not the greatest disrespect? Is it because CBN and bank officials are involved in making money out of this, that it is not mentioned? Shame.
