The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has partnered with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) to support the growth of the digital economy and to facilitate the phased implementation of e-invoicing, with the ultimate goal of enhancing efficiency, transparency and effectiveness in Nigeria’s tax system.

At an e-invoicing workshop on ‘Unlocking Business Value with the NRS e-invoicing Merchant-Buyer Solution (MBS): Practical, Hands-on Demonstration, Compliance and Benefits’, the bodies argued that as the tax ecosystem was evolving rapidly, there is a need for collective commitment to embracing innovation, strengthening compliance and modernising tax administration in Nigeria.

President of the CITN, Innocent Ohagwa, said the event, centred on bridging the gap between policy and practice, was paramount, especially as Nigeria navigates the era of new tax reforms and the need to embrace laws that follow.

Represented by a member of the Governing Council, Yemi Sanni, he said the essence of the workshop was to ensure that the systems and tools for effective implementation of the new tax laws are well understood and deployed.

While he reaffirmed the institute’s support to the revenue service on the reform journey, Ohagwa said it was also to deepen awareness, build capacity and voluntary compliance by all stakeholders.

Project Manager, NRS, MBS e-invoicing solution, Mohammed Bawa, who was represented by Senior Manager, Tax, NRS, Mbami Shomgwan, highlighted some of the benefits of transitioning to the digital process, stating that e-invoicing is based on structured compliance that makes informed decisions for national progress.

He added that since most invoicing in Nigeria is manually done, with the advent of the digital era, Nigeria should not be left out.

Chairman, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Committee of the CITN, Dr Ruth Adimula, described the e-invoicing system as an innovative solution designed to streamline invoicing processes while ensuring compliance with global standards and international best practices.

Built on a robust framework, she said it sets a new benchmark for efficiency, security, and reliability in managing fiscal and transactional activities in Nigeria.

According to her, it enables real-time digital reporting of business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions directly to tax authorities, such as the NRS, through a secure and structured platform.

“The overarching objective of this system is to enhance tax transparency, curb fraud, and modernise VAT reporting. In essence, every transaction becomes digitally visible to the tax authorities—leaving no room for opacity in invoicing,” she said.
