The Minister of Mines and Solid Minerals Development, Mrs Dieziani Alison -Madueke was in Beijing China recently where she addressed an Investment Forum and announced that the Government of Nigeria has approved a three-year tax holiday for new companies in the Solid Minerals sector. The companies are to commence payment of income taxes after three years beginning with accumulated tax liabilities of those previous three years. She also announced to that audience the reduction of company income tax from 35% to 30% and capital gains tax from 20% to 10%. Other incentives, according to the Minister, include import duty exemption on mining equipment and regularised repatriation of foreign capital.

SIR: Reacting to my "Playing games with the records" (The Guardian, Tuesday, December 15, 2009), a response to his attempt at '"setting the records straight" (The Guardian, Monday, December 7, 2009), my dear brother, Mayowa Akinsola, in "Not affirming the records" (The Guardian, Thursday, December 17, 2009) again strayed from the main issue raised in my original article to treat us to another delicious course in academic showmanship.

SIR: Derisive laughter or outright sadness swells inside any modest indigene of Oyo State each time the news of decampment into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by members of opposition parties is aired by the mass media. The reason is that the decampees are said to claim that their actions were motivated by the good performance of Governor Alao Akala, while you and I know too well that the only area in which Akala is performing is: politicking.

"K'olododo K'olodo pe, K'awon odale na o pe Atepe aiye, ile lo mo yen - Haruna Ishola in the 60s   IT is a great privilege for me to share with Nigerians some of the dividends of my relationship with Papa Chris Oladipo Ogunbanjo, OFR, CON, one of the most prominent, respected and revered elder statesmen in Nigeria today, and, who, thanks to the gift of long life, will be 86 years old tomorrow, Monday December 14, 2009. I have chosen Haruna Ishola's deep philosophical rendition as a medium through which to analyse and celebrate Papa's long and consistently successful and fulfilling life.

THE cessation of armed agitation in the Niger Delta as a result of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua's Amnesty Initiative is a very laudable achievement. Even more commendable is Yar'Adua's statesmanly gesture of granting ten percent equity in the oil business in Nigeria to the Niger Delta.

Many out there, especially those engrossed in the hustle of city life, may not appreciate the magnitude of the impending food crisis. For such and more, agriculture appears secondary on the scale of things that require urgent attention from government at all levels. We all complain about zero electricity and water supply, bad roads, terrible schools and all those other things that ordinarily are essential in sane climes where it is granted that government is led by wise men.

There comes a time in the life of a nation when a visionary, a rare patriot inspired by an urgent sense of commitment to improving the quality of life of a people elects to step out of the woodwork and onto the plate.

Finally, it has come to this. Our literature, the lone place where it has been possible to revel in an unqualified sense of achievement, has now too been placed on the altar of desecration. Every year since 2005 the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas company gathers a philistine crowd to wine and dine at a well-appointed venue in Lagos or Abuja.

In the mid 1980s, as the 1990s drew closer, I was a part of the national communication and mobilization (NACOMO) effort to make Nigeria achieve the target of universal child immunization (UCI) by 1990. It is therefore impossible for one like me, immersed as I am in development work, to ignore the silently raging controversy around the implementation of the agreement between Pfizer, the giant pharmaceutical transnational, and the government of Kano state. One of the concerns that I was called upon to address, using my communications skills, was how to make the issue less controversial than it was getting. Among the allies to achieve this was the Ulamaü the intellectual movement of the Islamic community.

'Never say Never!" is the cry of the pessimist who would rather believe something will always go wrong than right, and would warn against the next round of calamity than be willing to enjoy the present period of bliss, no matter how brief! Between ASUU and Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), employers of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), it is audacious to think strike will never come again, now that some respite has been contrived from the three months of harrowing experience of strike, embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, since June 22, 2009.

SIR: I want to use this medium to express my heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family of Mr. Bayo Ohu, who was murdered in his home in Lagos, on Sunday, September 20. I want to encourage my sister Blessing the wife to take heart and be strong in the Lord. If the Lord has permitted it, leave your case in the hands of the All-wise and All-knowing Judge of the whole earth.

SIR: It is sad, very sad indeed that matters of governance are routinely mishandled the way they are in this country. The government says a lot about making Nigeria one of the 20 largest economies in the world by 2020. Yet we refuse to pay adequate attention to those, particularly education, human capital development and good infrastructure that are basic requirements for the development of this goal.
