It will come about according to my purposes…The Lord Almighty has spoken-who can change his plans? When his hand moves, who can stop him?”-Isaiah 14:24,27.…

MANY do not understand the stifling uncomfortable sensation of an invisible glass ceiling hovering over everything they are involved in. It is as if there is an influence or force saying “this far and no more.” This is a clear indication of bondage by the forces of darkness.

The old order changeth, yielding place to new, And God fulfills Himself in many ways. Lest one good custom should corrupt the world. More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of… If, knowing God, they lift not hands of prayer… For so the whole round earth is every way, Bound by gold chains about the feet of God (Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892), Le Morte d’Arthur.

Gideon was called to deliver and judge the nation of Israel when they were under the fierce oppression of the Midianites and the Amalekites (Judges 6:1-4). The Israelites were poor and fearful. When God called Gideon, he felt inadequate and wondered how he could defeat the oppressors and deliver the oppressed (Judges 6:11-16). With such a great challenge before him, he needed assurance from the Lord. Given some initial assurance (Judges 6:19-24), his faith was strong enough to destroy the idolatrous altar of his father (Judges 6:25-27). “The Spirit of the LORD” soon came upon him so he could begin the great work for which God had called him. His faith was growing; he did not immediately or instantly come into strong, unshakable, extraordinary faith. With divine responses that cleared all his doubts (Judges 6:36-40; 7:13-15), his faith became firm and his victory certain.

When God created us, He equipped us with every good thing that we need to be successful in life, but many of us are not where God created us to be. God said that we would be the head and not the tail, and that we would be the top and not the bottom, yet many of our lives do not exhibit any of these promises of God. We have allowed our lives to label God as a liar.

Easter is a day of celebration because it represents the fulfilment of our faith as Christians. St. Paul wrote that, unless Christ rose from the dead, our faith is in vain (1 Corinthians 15:17). Through His death, Christ saved mankind from bondage to sin, and He destroyed the hold that death has on all of us; but it is His Resurrection that gives us the promise of new life, both in this world and the next.

The commemoration of Easter is to draw our attention to Jesus Christ as the Symbol of peace. It, therefore, becomes wise that the entire nation should use this period of Easter to foster peace and love in the country, as this is the only way we can acknowledge and appreciate what Jesus has done for humanity.

Leadership and sacrifice, as demonstrated by Jesus Christ through His death on the Cross of Calvary, are virtues that are hard to find in the world. But these are crucial qualities that are urgently needed to make the society a better place for all to thrive and survive. As Nigerian Christians join others all over the world to celebrate Easter today, which incidentally coincides with the election period in the country, it is pertinent to wonder how much of these virtues the new leaders are ready to imbibe to impact positively on the Nigerian society. Are they capable of making the necessary sacrifices to unite the country, heal past wounds and thus foster peace? Will they provide exemplary leadership that craves only the welfare and wellbeing of the people? How much of these qualities is required to move the country forward? Some clerics that spoke to CHRIS IREKAMBA on the issue define what leadership demands.

This is the Christly standard of loving our neighbour. It expresses God, Whom the Bible says in 1 John 4:8, is Love itself.
