THE other day on a BBC television programme, an erudite British Professor of Physics stated that he is certain God does not exist. He based his claim on the fact that there is no empirical, physically scientific proof of God’s existence. Such a statement can seem shocking at best and blasphemous at worst to anyone…

A deacon was preaching about marriage in church one day. While in the middle of the topic, a member rose and said: “Sir you are talking about marriage and in this church we can identify those that are married by the fact that they wear their wedding rings. But sir, where is your own wedding ring? And for sometime now, your wife too has not been wearing hers.” This observation halted the preacher on his track and he ended the topic abruptly. This scenario prompted this week’s topic on the significance of wedding ring. In some churches, a wedding ceremony is not considered consummated until wedding rings are worn to seal the marriage. They believe it is a commitment or token of love that binds the husband and wife together for life. In some other churches, however, solemnisation of holy wedlock can take place without the wedding ring. So, what really is the significance of the wedding ring? And why is it that some couples, after wedding, no longer bother to wear their wedding rings? Does this portend anything? Can a wedding ring prevent infidelity? Why are some churches not interested in the practice? CHRIS IREKAMBA reports the reaction of some clerics.
