The Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Prof. Razaq Olatunde Rom Kalilu, has disclosed that over 15,000 students of the institution who were approved for the Federal Government’s student loan scheme are yet to receive the funds.
Kalilu made this known on Thursday during a press conference heralding the university’s 18th convocation ceremony, expressing concern over the delay in disbursement under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
According to him, about 19,000 students of the university applied for the loan scheme, out of which more than 15,000 were approved, but have not received payment.
“About 19,000 of our students applied for the NELFUND scheme. Out of this number, over 15,000 have been approved, but they are yet to receive the funds,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that while the initiative is commendable and holds promise for improving access to higher education, the delay in disbursement could undermine its intended impact, especially for students facing financial constraints.
He urged the relevant authorities to expedite action on the release of the funds to ensure that beneficiaries can meet their academic and welfare needs without further hardship.
Kalilu also highlighted recent strides recorded by the institution, noting that academic stability has improved significantly, allowing the university to grant students a long vacation for the first time in about 12 years.
He expressed optimism that the improved academic calendar and learning environment would positively influence students’ performance and overall output.
The LAUTECH Vice-Chancellor further reiterated the institution’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards, stressing that the quality of graduates remains a top priority.
The convocation ceremony, which began on April 16, will run through April 23, featuring a series of activities, including lectures, award of degrees, and conferment of honours.
