Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, has said that education is key to success.
Abbas made this assertion at the public hearing on the 10 bills presented by the House Committee on Federal Colleges of Education on Tuesday in Abuja.
The speaker, represented by the Deputy Chief Whip, Rep. Ibrahim Isiaka, also described education as being at the core of human capital development.
He said that the bills seeking to establish federal colleges of education were appropriate and timely.
“The demand for education is high; this is an opportunity to train the next generation.
“Colleges of education will not only create employment but train teachers,” he said.
Abbas, however, enjoined the stakeholders to engage constructively in order to strengthen Nigeria’s education system.
Earlier, Chairman of the committee, Rep. Adamu Tanko, reiterated the house’s commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian, irrespective of location or socio-economic background, had access to quality education.
Tanko said that the establishment of federal colleges of education was a critical step to addressing the gaps in teacher training and strengthening the education sector.
He expressed the lawmakers’ willingness to build the skilled workforce needed to drive national progress through education.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bills had passed second reading.
