Excitement as female students move into renovated Abia varsity hostel

–VC urges Otti to fulfil his more hostels promises to students

–Contractor remobilizes to commence work on others

Jubilation and excitement greeted the commencement of the movement of about 5,000 female students of Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) into the hostel renovated and retrofitted by the state Governor/Visitor to the University, Dr. Alex Otti.

The Governor/Visitor had, during his visit to the university in March 2025, not only promised to renovate and retrofit the dilapidated and then dilapidating hostels in the university, but also to build and equip a new Faculty of Law following its ongoing re-location from Umuahia back to Uturu.

President of the Students Union Government (SUG), Comrade Emma Ugoani, told The Guardian that the movement to the new 5,000-capacity hostel commenced Tuesday night, describing it as a welcome development, for which they (students) are grateful to Governor Otti, the Visitor to the University.

The Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of the ABSU Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu, who was a past Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, urged the students to make the best use of all the facilities being provided for them, stressing that their doing so would encourage the governor to sustain his love and care and continued positive disposition to attending to their needs and wellbeing.

The Vice Chancellor (VC), Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, had on Tuesday, during an inspection tour of the retrofitted hostel before the commencement of the students’ movement into it, expressed profound appreciation to the Governor and Visitor to the University, Dr. Alex Otti, for fulfilling his promise to retrofit the hostels during his inspection visit to the University in March this year.

Commending Governor Otti for his swift intervention and commitment to the welfare of the students, the VC said, “It is a remarkable turnaround, converting this previously dilapidated structure into an ultra-modern hostel that meets international standards.”

He prayed to God to provide Otti with “all the resources needed to fulfill his other promises to the university, which include: construction of more hostels, a new Law Faculty building, a new cafeteria, and the holistic development of the University, so that ABSU will rank among the top three universities in Nigeria.”

On the reconstruction of the remaining dilapidated hostels that the governor promised to attend to, the Chairman of Dav Notch Nigeria Ltd, the contractor handling them, Hon. Victor Ochie, who spoke beside his mobilized construction equipment, said that his company was and is fully poised to commence work on the other hostels immediately the students vacate therefrom.

Inspection tour of the newly retrofitted hostel showed it comprises several ultra-modern features, including brand-new furniture in all rooms, wooden desks with reading lamps, a state-of-the-art common room, steel double bunk beds with six-inch mattresses, a public address system for announcements, fire hose reels with active water supply, kitchens and laundries on each floor, constant water supply, and other modern amenities.
