Expert calls for increased focus on early years education in Africa

As conversations around education reform continue across Africa, Founder and Chief Executive of Alpha Chains Limited, Caroline Popoola has called for greater attention to be paid to early childhood education.

She argued that governments, policymakers and society often overlook the critical importance of the earliest years of a child’s development.

“Too often, we wait until children enter primary or secondary school before we begin talking about educational outcomes. By then, we have already missed some of the most important years of a child’s development,” she stated.
Popoola, an early childhood education advocate in a statement said investment in early years education remains essential to achieving long-term social and economic development across Africa.

She maintained that the impact of quality early education extends beyond the classroom and plays a significant role in shaping future outcomes for children and societies.

“There are easier ways to run a business. But when you see the difference quality early education makes to a child’s future, you realise this work is about far more than childcare. It is about changing lives,” she said.

Reflecting on her career journey, she recalled that her transition into childcare came after losing her job as an insurance underwriter in London more than two decades ago.

According to her, the experience prompted a shift towards a profession she initially knew little about.

“I didn’t know everything. But I was willing to learn. I stayed curious, remained teachable and surrounded myself with people who knew what I didn’t,” she explained.

She noted that continuous learning, collaboration and openness have remained central to her leadership approach and professional development.

Speaking on organisational growth and leadership, Popoola stressed the importance of building systems that can sustain institutions beyond individual leadership.

“Build the systems before you think you need them. Strong systems create consistency, develop leaders and allow organisations to grow without depending on one person,” she said.

Popoola noted that over the past five years, she has supported initiatives aimed at strengthening early childhood education through professional development platforms and leadership programmes for educators across Africa.

She reiterated the need for policymakers and stakeholders to prioritise early childhood education as part of broader education reforms across the continent.
