FG inaugurates governing council for Ogoni varsity

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Governing Council and Principal Officers of the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, Rivers State.

Speaking during the inauguration on Monday in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, charged council members to provide visionary leadership and work with commitment, transparency, and integrity in line with the institution’s establishing Act.

He noted that each member holds a unique value to the growth of the university, which is strategically positioned to become a center of excellence in environmental and technological studies, research, and innovation.

Dr. Alausa described Koroma/Saakpenwa’s peaceful, scenic, and serene environment as an ideal setting for academic growth and groundbreaking research, adding that the university’s modern facilities and functional structures would make it a hub for innovation both locally and internationally.

He congratulated the newly appointed officers and urged them to collaborate effectively to drive the institution’s mandate, enhance research capacity, and contribute to national development.

Dr. Alausa said the establishment of the institution is not merely an expansion of the tertiary education landscape but a deliberate strategic response to the urgent environmental challenges confronting Nigeria and the wider world.

His words: “This university is envisioned as a center of excellence in environmental sciences, renewable energy, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and sustainable technological research. It is expected to generate homegrown, research-driven solutions that respond to both local needs and global aspirations.

“To the newly appointed Governing Council, extend the congratulations. Your appointment is both recognition of your capacities and a call to patriotic service. The role you are about to assume goes beyond ceremony, demands visionary leadership, strategic oversight, accountability, and unwavering integrity.”

In his goodwill message, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, represented by the Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, urged the new appointees to discharge their duties with integrity, professionalism, and a deep sense of responsibility.

The institution has Prof. Don Mon Baridam as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, while Prof. Chinedu Mmom serves as the Vice-Chancellor.

The Minister also inaugurated the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, where he urged Council members to see their appointment as a call to service.
