The newly elected leadership of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), Ogun State Chapter, has commended the Ogun State Government and the Federal Government for what it described as sustained efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector, while urging increased funding for tertiary institutions.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Araba Okanlawon, the association praised Ogun State Governor for his “visionary leadership and unwavering commitment” to advancing education across the state.
NAUS particularly lauded the recent transfer of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) to the Federal Government, describing the move as historic and strategic.
According to the student body, the transition is expected to improve the institution’s access to funding, enhance academic standards, strengthen institutional capacity, and guarantee long-term sustainability for students, staff and the broader education ecosystem.
Okanlawon also acknowledged the Ogun State Government’s wider investments in tertiary education, citing infrastructural development, policy reforms and other initiatives aimed at improving quality, stability and global competitiveness within the state’s higher institutions.
At the federal level, the NAUS Chairman commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what the association described as student-focused education reforms, particularly the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFund).
The association noted that the loan scheme has eased financial pressure on students and their families, expanded access to higher education and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to human capital development.
The newly elected NAUS leadership also expressed appreciation to its immediate past executives in Ogun State, led by Adeyemi Opeyemi, crediting them with laying a solid foundation through advocacy, service and sustained engagement on student welfare issues.
“As we assume office, we reaffirm our commitment to constructive engagement, responsible advocacy and the protection of the academic and socio-economic interests of university students in Ogun State,” the statement said.
However, the association called on both the Federal and Ogun State Governments to increase subvention and overall funding for tertiary institutions, stressing that improved financing is critical to addressing infrastructural deficits, boosting research capacity, improving staff welfare, expanding student support services and sustaining quality education in line with global best practices.
“Improved financial support is essential for the long-term growth and competitiveness of our universities,” the statement added.
NAUS pledged its readiness to work collaboratively with government, institutional authorities and other stakeholders to promote an enabling academic environment that supports excellence, innovation and sustainable development across Ogun State’s university system.
