Oyo lauds NUT for reopening schools after strike

Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT

The Oyo State Government, on Wednesday commended the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for suspending its strike and directing public primary school teachers to resume duties across the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, gave the commendation in a statement issued on Wednesday, describing the union’s decision as being in the best interest of pupils and the state.

Oyelade recalled that the State Executive Council had, at its meeting last Tuesday, appealed to the NUT at both the national and state levels to reconsider its industrial action and reopen schools to prevent pupils from remaining out of the classroom.

According to him, prolonged school closure could expose children to social vices and other dangers associated with idleness.

He said the union’s decision to call off the month-long strike had spared the state the additional burden of coping with the social consequences of keeping pupils away from school while efforts continue to address the security challenges that triggered the industrial action.

“By calling off the month-long strike, the union has graciously saved the Oyo State Government and the people from the double jeopardy of the kidnapping incident itself and the negative social consequences of having students remain idle and vulnerable,” he said.

The commissioner also commended residents of the state for their patience, understanding and support throughout the period of the strike.

He assured that the government remains committed to resolving the security concerns surrounding the recent abduction incident and restoring confidence in the state’s education system.

Oyelade noted that efforts were ongoing to bring the kidnapping crisis to a successful conclusion while ensuring the safety of teachers, pupils and other residents.
