Prioritise girl-child education, association urges govt

Kit-up a girl-child project

Members of the Manuwa Memorial Grammar School, Iju Odo (MMGSOSA), old students’ association, have urged the government to prioritise policies and infrastructure that can fast-track the education of the girl-child across the country.

National President of the association, Mrs Gbemisola Onasanya, who made the plea at their yearly reunion, emphasised the importance of the boarding school system in promoting girl-child education.

Onasanya disclosed that the association has taken significant steps to restore the school’s boarding facilities, which have been moribund for nearly four decades, starting with the girls’ hostel.

Represented by the National Vice President, Stephen Fasawe, the alumni boss appealed to the government not to relent in its efforts to provide the necessary infrastructure for teaching and learning in schools.

While commending the association for its efforts, the Ondo State government expressed delight at the priority given to restoring the boarding house system.

The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, while inaugurating the new Corpers Lodge built by the association for prospective National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the school, urged others to emulate the example set by the old students.

The reunion featured various activities, including quiz competition among students, a health trek for abundant life, a soul-lifting song service, the yearly general meeting, and a thanksgiving service.

The event also included the presentation of Awards of Honour to some old students for their contributions to the upliftment of the college.
