UNILAG gets N140m electricity project to light up Faculty of Arts

The University of Lagos (UNILAG)

A N140 million worth electricity project for the Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos was unveiled recently in the university. The project was conceived to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to classrooms and study areas during national grid failures.

The initiative, titled “Light Up Faculty of Arts University of Lagos,” was unveiled by the UNILAG Alumni Association and to be funded by a philanthropist Tunde Fanimokun, who was present at the event.

Speaking at the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Ilupeju Mudashiru, who was highly excited about the project, noted that the faculty has high electricity demands due to its three lifts, over 40 classrooms per floor and numerous offices.

“Whenever the national grid fails, the university generator cannot sustain us due to our high consumption. This project will ensure evening programmes continue uninterrupted and redeem the faculty’s image as a top learning environment,” the dean said.

Fanimokun, who has funded several educational initiatives nationwide, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting education.

“I am wholeheartedly doing this, and I am here to support UNILAG. I believe God has blessed me, and I should be a blessing to others. This project is part of our broader effort to invest in educational institutions, which has already benefited about 12 universities across Nigeria.

“We started discussions for this project on November 11, 2025, and today it is finally coming to light,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the representative of the University of Lagos Alumni, 1st National Vice President, Dr Bala Yesufu, said that the project means a lot to the Alumni and to the faculty. “The project is Light up Faculty of Arts, which indirectly means we are lighting up the university. The project is an alternative energy for the faculty. So we are happy about what is happening and we thank Chief Tunde Fanimokun for his kind gesture towards the university.

“He has promised to do a lot of things for us, he has done so many and there are a lot in the pipeline. We pray for longevity for him in good health,” Yesufu stated.
