Varsity honours seven Nigerians, Ghanaian with honorary degrees

For improving lives and unlocking the potential within, World Innovators University (WIU), India, has conferred honorary doctorate degrees on seven outstanding individuals from Nigeria and one from Ghana.

The recipients are Professor of Leadership and Enterprises, University of Greater Manchester, Christian Harrison; entrepreneur and business leader, Mrs Adesomoju Opeyemi, cybersecurity engineer, Victor Edem, banking expert, Michael Obi, chartered accountant, Ogheneochuko Ahwi, Cybersecurity consultant, Harrison Tettehfio; Rasheed Saliu, and educationist, Dr Ayodele Adetuyi.

Speaking at the award presentation held at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos, Chancellor, World Innovators University, Prof. Gangadhar Joshi, said the award is a testament to the creativity, resilience, and leadership of remarkable individuals and organisations across diverse fields.

He noted that the honourees have made significant impacts in science, technology, business, health, social innovation, and higher education, driving global progress and inspiring future generations.

On the selection process, Joshi said the institution adopted critical criteria, looking at exceptional contributions, global or regional impact, recognition, excellence, and ethical leadership.

He explained that honorary doctoral awards are a reflection of the institution’s commitment to recognising individuals who have demonstrated a deep commitment to the principles of scholarship, research, community service, and leadership. He said these principles, which are the very foundation of WIU’s mission, are embodied in the lives and achievements of the award recipients.

“We are not only celebrating their individual achievements, but also the legacy they have created. They have inspired countless individuals to pursue their dreams, embrace challenges, and make their own mark in the world,” Joshi said.

He disclosed that the mission of the institution is to champion the art and science of innovation and knowledge management across all fields through inclusive learning, strategic research, and value-driven capacity. development for sustainable personal, institutional, and societal growth.

The chancellor added that the university was established as a global centre that advances innovation, creativity, and knowledge through inclusive learning, interdisciplinary research, talent development, and strategic partnerships, fostering sustainable impact across academia, industry, and society.

Provost, WIU, Prof. Ashok Gupta, said the emphasis on innovation, impact, and global excellence by the college signifies a focus on creating new ideas and solutions that have a significant positive impact on the world, and achieving excellence in a global context.

This involves developing innovative strategies, products, or services that address critical needs and improve quality of life, while also striving for high standards of performance and effectiveness on a global scale.

Registrar, WIU, Prof. Catalino Mendoza, said the institution has set a new benchmark in education with its revolutionary suite of qualifications tailored for global innovators, offering Bachelor of Innovation, Master of Innovation and Doctor of Innovation qualifications across diverse fields of study.

According to him, what sets the university apart is not just the range of qualifications offered, but the pedagogical approach emphasising practical experience, mentorship, and collaboration with industry leaders, ensuring that graduates are not only equipped with theoretical knowledge but are also ready to navigate the complexities of the ever-evolving global landscape.
