The Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University Okada (IUO), Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, on Saturday lauded the university’s founder for his foresight, courage and commitment to establishing Nigeria’s first private university.

Prof. Ezemonye made the remarks at the university’s 27th Founders Day ceremony and lecture, themed “Keeping the University Dream in a Fragile Ecosystem,” delivered by Dr. Sam Ikoku.

He said the founder’s initiative helped the institution evolve into one of Nigeria’s most respected private universities, known for nurturing knowledge, leadership and excellence.

“Founders Day offers us an opportunity not only to celebrate our achievements but also to reflect on the vision, sacrifices and determination that laid the foundation of this great institution,” he said.

Prof. Ezemonye noted that Igbinedion University began at a time when private universities were non-existent in Nigeria and described its success as the pathfinder for the country’s private university sector. He pointed out that the sector now includes more than 160 private universities.

The vice-chancellor also thanked the university’s leadership and community for their roles in the institution’s growth, including Deputy Chancellor and former Edo State Governor Chief Lucky Igbinedion, Chairman of the Governing Council Prof. Ahmed Tijani Mora, council members, management, staff, alumni and students.

The event was attended by Chief Lucky Igbinedion and Dr. Sam Ikoku, chairman/CEO of Sam Ikoku Group.
