WAEC releases 2025 WASSCE results, withholds 192,089

West African Examination Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the 2025 candidates in Nigeria.

The examination spanned a period of eight weeks and one day, from April 24 to June 20, 2025. Speaking at a media briefing yesterday in Lagos, the Head of Nigeria National Office, WAEC, Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, said the conduct of the WASSCE for the 2025 candidates, despite some hitches, was a huge success.

According to him, the exam body, in its ongoing pursuit of innovation in service delivery, introduced the computer-based WASSCE for school candidates, which allowed them to choose between a computer-based or pen-and-paper format.

Dangut said 1,973,365 candidates registered for the examination from 23,554 recognised secondary schools in the country, while 1,969,313 candidates sat for the examination. He added that 12,178 candidates with varying degrees of Special Needs registered for the examination.

According to him, out of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination in Nigeria, 1,517,517 candidates, representing 77.06 per cent, have their results fully processed and released, while 451,796 candidates, representing 22.94 per cent, have one or more of their subjects still being processed due to some issues to be resolved.

He added that efforts were, however, being made to speedily complete the processes to enhance the release of the affected candidates’ results within a couple of days.

According to the council, the analysis of statistics of candidates’ performance in the examination shows that out of 1,969,313 candidates that sat for the examination, 1,718,090 candidates, representing 87.24 per cent, obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects (i.e. with or without English Language and/or Mathematics), while 754,545 candidates, representing 38.32 per cent, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Dangut noted that a comparison of the percentage of candidates in this category in WASSCE for School 2024 and 2025, revealed that in this year’s WASSCE, there was 33.8 per cent decrease in performance (that is, those who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, was 72.12 per cent).
