A rising star shaping Nigeria’s energy future

In the ever-evolving landscape of Nigeria’s energy sector, few have emerged as rapidly as Peter Egbumokei.

With a wealth of experience spanning more than two decades, Egbumokei has become a rising star, celebrated for his leadership, technical expertise, and contributions to the development of sustainable energy solutions in the country. His achievements over the past several years have placed him at the forefront of major energy projects, further cementing his reputation as one of the industry’s most promising leaders.

Egbumokei’s journey into the energy sector began with a foundation in Materials & Metallurgical Engineering, followed by an MBA and a Master’s in Project Management. These academic credentials, combined with his natural aptitude for leadership, equipped him for a series of high-profile roles across major energy projects in Nigeria. His tenure at Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG), in particular, highlighted his ability to oversee complex projects that directly impacted Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.

One of Egbumokei’s key milestones was his pivotal role in the Lekki Industrial Gas Supply Pipeline Project, which took place between 2020 and 2021. Valued at $152 million, this ambitious project involved the construction of a 170 km gas pipeline from Ijebu-Ode to Ibadan, connecting key industrial areas to Nigeria’s national gas distribution network. Under Egbumokei’s leadership, the project’s scope included not just the pipeline’s construction, but also the development of a 40 mmscf/d gas processing plant. By spearheading this large-scale endeavor, Egbumokei played a vital role in boosting Nigeria’s industrial capacity and ensuring more reliable access to natural gas for the rapidly growing population. His ability to manage both technical and political risks in this project highlights his versatility in navigating the multifaceted energy landscape.

Another landmark achievement came in 2021 with the Lekki Industrial Gas Supply Project, a $52 million initiative aimed at constructing a city-gate gas facility in the Lekki-Epe axis of Lagos. This was a major infrastructural development to provide a stable gas supply to the Lagos Free Trade Zone (LFTZ)—a key hub for industrial activity in Nigeria. The project included the construction of a 12 km pipeline, further demonstrating Egbumokei’s capability in overseeing gas distribution systems in Nigeria’s most commercially active regions. In addition to this, his leadership ensured the alignment of stakeholders across the public and private sectors, driving timely completion despite the logistical challenges and the fast-paced nature of the Lagos business environment.

Egbumokei’s expertise in managing and delivering complex projects is not limited to gas distribution. His work on the Kongo-Alpha Gas Pipeline stands as another shining example of his success in the sector. This $225 million initiative, aimed at providing gas to industrial areas in Kogi State, required extensive coordination between contractors, government agencies, and community leaders. The 140 km pipeline and the associated 60 mmscf/d city-gate gas plant served as critical infrastructure for the region’s growing industrial base, with the project increasing gas supply capacity and contributing significantly to local economic growth.

The past few years have also seen Egbumokei expand his role beyond project management into thought leadership and safety culture transformation. His work on Shell’s Hearts & Minds Project, which aimed to enhance safety culture across Shell’s operations in Nigeria and beyond, stands as a testament to his commitment to the wellbeing of workers and local communities. Under Egbumokei’s leadership, Shell Nigeria made great strides in integrating behavioral safety practices into its operations, which has led to a noticeable decrease in workplace incidents and an improved safety culture within Shell’s Nigeria operations.

In addition to his technical accomplishments, Egbumokei’s influence has extended into the academic and professional spheres. He has been actively involved in presenting papers at international conferences and publishing in global professional journals. His article, “Hearts and Minds to Hands and Feet”, presented at the 2008 SPE International Conference and published as SPE 111695, is widely regarded in the industry as a pioneering work on the importance of behavioral safety in high-risk sectors.

His ability to connect academic research with real-world applications has earned him recognition beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Through his published works and peer-reviewed contributions, Egbumokei has played a significant role in shaping global energy discussions, particularly in the areas of safety, efficiency, and sustainable energy management. His expertise has made him a sought-after figure in global energy forums, where his insights into project management and process engineering continue to inspire professionals across the industry.
In 2021, his leadership and impact earned
him a place among Shell’s Top Project Managers in the company’s global network. This recognition, along with numerous awards throughout his career, confirms his status as a rising star in Nigeria’s energy sector and beyond.

As Egbumokei continues to lead major projects and contribute to thought leadership in the energy industry, it is clear that his influence will only grow.

His ability to manage large-scale projects, navigate complex stakeholder environments, and lead with a focus on safety and sustainability places him at the cutting edge of the energy transformation in Nigeria. Given his track record and contributions, Peter Egbumokei is poised to be a central figure in the future of Nigeria’s energy sector for years to come.
