Firms partner to scale up renewables in Africa

GENESIS Energy, a pan-African clean energy infrastructure development and asset management company, has entered into a strategic partnership with Global Citizen, a leading international advocacy organisation committed to ending extreme poverty.

The partnership positions the energy firm as a policy partner for the Global Citizen’s Scaling Up Renewables in Africa campaign, which seeks to attract greater investment and policy attention towards expanding clean energy access across the continent.

The agreement shows resolve to mobilise investment and shape policies that deliver cleaner communities, industrial growth, and a resilient future, while aligning with global efforts to meet climate targets.

Through the collaboration, both organisations aim to run a unifying campaign that accelerates the continent’s energy transition. The initiative will leverage Global Citizen’s extensive advocacy platform and global network to engage government leaders, donors, civil society, and the private sector, to mobilise resources and influence reforms that enable reliable, affordable and sustainable energy access for millions.

Speaking on the significance of the alliance, Chairman Genesis Energy, Akinwole Omoboriowo, reaffirmed the company’s mission of lighting Up Africa One Community at a Time.

He said: “At GENESIS Energy, we believe clean, reliable energy is the foundation of economic growth, social progress, and environmental sustainability. Through our partnership with Global Citizen, we are raising awareness and championing clean energy’s vital role in closing Africa’s energy gap.

“Clean energy is more than power; it’s a catalyst for transformation. Our work today sets the stage for decades of sustainable progress, empowering communities, creating jobs, and contributing meaningfully to the global fight against climate change. This partnership is not just about energy. It’s about opportunity, equity, and shaping the future for generations to come,” he said.

He stressed that together, they will drive innovation and advocate for policy changes that accelerate access to energy, bringing opportunities to millions of underserved communities.

Under the agreement, both organisations will prioritise thought leadership campaigns on clean energy, policy engagements, and donor mobilisation for high-impact projects. Part of the advocacy will spotlight the role of clean gas as a transitional fuel while pushing for supportive policies that expand clean energy access.

The effort aligns with the United Nations’ climate goals and contributes to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (affordable and clean energy) and Goal 13 (climate action).

By tackling Africa’s longstanding energy access gaps, the initiative is expected to strengthen the region’s energy resilience.

Support inclusive growth, and help deliver on global climate commitments. Co-Founder and Chief Policy, Impact, and Global Affairs Officer at Global Citizen, Michael Sheldrick said access to clean, reliable and affordable energy is essential to driving economic development and remains a critical lever in the global fight to eradicate extreme poverty.

“Together, with GENESIS Energy, we are committed to supporting an energy transition that delivers returns, creating jobs, scaling private capital, driving policy change and expanding access to reliable power for millions,” he said.
