Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has expressed concern over the rising incidence of vandalism within its networks, urging its customers to remain vigilant and protect electricity infrastructure in their neighbourhoods and communities.
MEDL’s Head of Communication, Emeka Ezeh, stated in Enugu while announcing the arrest of a suspected vandal of power installations in Nsukka, that the company was incurring significant losses due to the activities of vandals.
The suspect, Jeremiah Daniel, was apprehended in possession of 500mm intermediate cables, earth, and copper wires, suspected to be property of the MEDL by the Isiuja Vigilante group over the weekend.
Ezeh expressed deep concern over the negative impact of vandalism on the company’s operations, stating that it was adversely affecting the quality of power supply to customers.
He commended the efforts of the Isiuja Vigilante group, describing the arrest as a clear indication that stakeholders’ collaboration was yielding positive results.
Ezeh also called on other communities across Enugu State to take a cue from what the Isiuja vigilante group had done.
“There is no way we can protect these electricity infrastructures across our network without the support and collaboration of our stakeholders.
“The company spends millions of naira replacing vandalised equipment, and this is no longer sustainable,” he stated. He further confirmed that the suspect, along with the recovered items, had been handed over to the police at Nsukka Urban Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.
