NIPCO constructs new 5,000 MT LPG storage facility
The Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO) has embarked on the construction of a 5,000-metric tonne (MT) Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage facility to ameliorate the challenges of domestic supply of cooking gas in the country.
NIPCO spokesman, Taofeek Lawal, disclosed this during the company’s facility tour with the media on the ongoing 5,000 MT LPG storage capacity in Lagos.
Lawal said that the additional 5,000MT storage tank project when completed this year, would promote growth in Nigeria’s LPG market, adding that the facility commenced in April 2016, with over 80 workers and had not recorded any causality.
The NIPCO spokesman said when completed the company will have a total of 9,800MT of LPG storage capacity, adding that it has also recorded over 110,000 man hours spent on the projects.
He said the project is part of NIPCO’s conscious initiative to deepen the LPG market through a well-articulated project and policy for the benefit of all stakeholders.
According to him, over the years, the company has put in place a massive 4,500 MTLPG storage facility to deepen the domestic gas market.
“Today, another 5,000MT LPG storage facility is about to be completed to enhance growth and boost cooking gas availability in Nigeria. These initiatives are essential to encourage other companies to join hands in growing the economic and environmental benefits of LP gas against the backdrop of the abundant gas resources in the country,” he said.
Lawal assured stakeholders of the company’s commitment in increasing gas infrastructure in the country, as epitomised by the billions of naira investment in the sector.
“NIPCO‘s commitment to gas sector flows from the Federal Government’s call to promote the gas sector in Nigeria which is gifted with abundant indigenous supply. The LPG terminal at NIPCO is a state of the art ultra-modern facility with high level of automation and requires very minimal human intervention in its entire operations.
“It ranks among the biggest storage facility in Nigeria, and undoubtedly contributes to increasing domestic consumption of LPG, popularly referred to as cooking gas, through plethora of promotion activities. At NIPCO Plc., safety of the personnel and of the surrounding environment is first priority and hence the terminal is equipped with modern facilities that are designed for fire prevention and as well for fire fighting.”

This kind of storage facility is what the federal government should demand that every Genco should have on site. What this allows is for continuous production of electricity regards of the problem in the niger delta region. Genco should be forced to store gas on site to last at least a month. This storage facility can also be supplied via railway or specialized tankers. The is no reason Nigeria should be having any gas related problem, and there is no reason we should still be using firewood and kerosene when the country has abundant gas supply and is allowing flaring of gas.
We will review and take appropriate action.
