400 girls to display their flair for science at CKF girls only science and technology fair

Over 400 students from selected public schools in Lagos will take part in the first girls only science and technology fair in Nigeria. Organised by the Christopher Kolade Foundation (CKF), the SHE 2017 Science & Technology Fair holds on Wednesday, 8 November 2017, at the Shell Hall, MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

The fair will feature exhibits of SHE Initiative clubs across six Lagos State public schools and speaker panels comprising of successful women in the field of science and technology.

According to the event’s organisers, over 600 guests, including CKF friends, partners, donors, and stakeholders in the education sector, are expected. The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule, will deliver a keynote address at the fair designed to highlight the technology proficiencies of girls in state-owned schools and motivate more girls to explore the exciting world of science and technology.

The SHE Initiative is a science and technology immersion programme designed to offer girls from low and middle-income families a unique opportunity to experience science and technology in relatable, interactive and fun ways.

The programme is designed to stir participants’ curiosity and interest in exploring the world of science and technology, change the stereotypes around girls and science, and equip participants with life-long skills in the realms of science and technology, while also offering personal development, leadership and ethics education.

Speaking on the forthcoming event, a Consultant with the Foundation Omobola Lana said “It is absolutely imperative that we connect young girls and women onto STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) career pipelines and it begins with overcoming gender stereotypes around science and demystifying science and technology education.”

Currently delivered in 10 Lagos State public schools, the SHE Initiative is sponsored by Dangote Foundation, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Kenna Partners, Aluko & Oyebode, Udo Udoma & Belo Osagie, SEPLAT, SystemSpecs, SecureID, Cornerstone Nigeria Plc, Friesland Campina WAMCO, Literamed, Abdulai, Taiwo & Co, Nigerian Breweries and AVIS.

CKF was founded in 1997 as a platform through which its founder, Dr Christopher Kolade, contributes to the development of Nigeria.
