Femi Onita began his career as a Trainee Geoscientist at Shell Warri in Nigeria, where he quickly distinguished himself through his deep technical acumen and unwavering commitment to operational excellence. His early work as a Graduate Petrophysicist with Shell Netherlands laid a strong foundation for his future contributions to the field. Over the years, Onita honed his skills in operational petrophysics and integrated petrophysical field studies, establishing himself as a key player in the successful delivery of complex projects. His work during these formative years set the stage for a career defined by innovation, leadership, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

One of Onita’s most significant achievements during this period was his role as the Senior Petrophysicist and Surveillance Lead for the Majnoon Asset in Iraq. In this capacity, he was responsible for providing critical petrophysical support for drilling operations, well reservoir facility management (WRFM) activities, and integrated studies. His leadership in surveillance activities was particularly noteworthy, as he developed and executed multi-million yearly surveillance plan that realized significant barrels of oil per day in 2017. This exceptional performance earned him special recognition and highlighted his ability to drive substantial operational improvements through meticulous planning and execution.

Onita’s technical expertise also led to substantial cost savings in the Majnoon Asset. By critically analyzing and interpreting cement bond logs (CBL) during the drilling campaign, he identified opportunities to optimize the drilling process resulting in a cost saving for the project. His ability to connect the dots and provide technical assurance was instrumental in the successful execution of multi-wells campaign, further solidifying his reputation as a technical leader in the industry. This achievement not only demonstrated his technical prowess but also underscored his strategic thinking and ability to deliver value across all aspects of a project.

In one of Onita’s previous jobs at Shell, he took on a pivotal role at Shell Projects and Technology Upstream (PTU) in Lagos, Nigeria, where he served as the Subsurface Coordinator. In this role, he was responsible for developing oil rim reservoir strategies and appraisals for a cluster of fields. His use of decision tree analysis and value of information (VOI) techniques was instrumental in streamlining the project’s approach to reservoir development which led to astounding cost savings. His work in this capacity not only advanced the technical understanding of reservoir management but also delivered significant financial benefits, highlighting his ability to align technical excellence with business objectives.

Beyond his operational achievements, Onita has also made substantial contributions to the academic and technical training spheres, further demonstrating his commitment to advancing the field of petrophysics. During his tenure at Shell Global Solutions in Rijswijk, Netherlands, he served as a QI rock physicist, where he built rock models that successfully de-risked exploration wells in Offshore Gabon, Offshore Benin, and the Caspian Sea. His expertise in quantitative interpretation (QI) techniques played a critical role in these projects, ensuring that exploration efforts were based on the most accurate and reliable data available.

In addition to his technical contributions, Onita has also been a dedicated educator and mentor. In 2012, he taught modules at Shell Open University’s QI course, where he played a key role in shaping the next generation of petrophysicists and geoscientists. His efforts in this regard have helped to disseminate advanced knowledge and techniques across the industry, ensuring that future professionals are well-equipped to tackle the complex challenges of the energy sector. His commitment to education and training reflects his broader dedication to the continuous improvement of the industry and its practitioners.

Femi Onita has firmly established himself as a thought leader in operational petrophysics, reservoir monitoring, and surveillance. His ability to blend deep technical knowledge with a strategic understanding of business and operations has made him an invaluable asset to the energy industry. Whether through his groundbreaking work in Iraq, his strategic contributions in Nigeria, or his educational efforts in the Netherlands, Onita has consistently demonstrated the critical role that technical excellence plays in the successful delivery of energy projects worldwide.

As he continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in petrophysics, Femi Onita’s work stands as a testament to the power of innovation, leadership, and a commitment to excellence. His career, marked by significant technical achievements and strategic insights, has not only advanced the field of petrophysics but has also contributed to the broader goals of operational efficiency, profitability, and sustainability in the energy industry. As the industry faces new challenges and opportunities, Onita’s legacy of excellence will undoubtedly continue to inspire and guide the next generation of energy professionals.
