Lagos charges farmers to develop value chain in fish production

The Lagos State government has charged members of the Lagos State Catfish and Allied Farmers Association (LASCAFAN) to explore new frontiers for the overall development of subsector, as there are enormous untapped investment potentialities.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Prince Gbolahun Lawal, who gave the charge in Lagos at the weekend at the inauguration of new executive members of the association, also called for collaborative efforts towards increased investment in the value chain.

Lawal, who was represented by the Programme Manager, Agriculture Development Authority, Dr Pereira Sheteolu, however, assured the association of the government’s continued support in its activities towards ensuring food security as well as stimulate growth in the fisheries value chain.

He explained that the importance of the fisheries and aquaculture industry to the development of Lagos economy could not be over-emphasised as it is the predominant occupation of people living in the coastal and estuarine areas of the state which spans a total of 180km along the coastline from Badagry to Epe areas.

The commissioner lauded the association for its rule in the development of aquaculture in the promotion with it promotion of the practice of catfish farming among others.Prince Lawal urged the members of the association to cooperate with the newly inaugurated members of the executive council to ensure they move the association to a greater height.
