PANOG harp on farm registration
Poultry Association of Nigeria Ogun State Chapter (PANOG) has called for enforcement of farm registration in the state, for the sustainable growth of the industry.
Speaking at a Press Conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the body, which lamented dearth of reliable data, said the exercise must be driven by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with PANOG, at no cost to farmers.
The state chairman, Blessing Alawode, said to increase the market share of poultry product as a protein source, farmers cannot shy away from marketing and promotion. “Since egg and chicken are majorly unbranded – every stakeholder contributes in relation to size and the best way to go about this is through a check off day-old-chicks.”
The body called on all the hatcheries to support the poultry industry by approving the request which has been lingering for years, adding that industry classification should be strictly adhered to by ensuring that upstream and downstream sector players restrict their operations within the value chain to avoid unhealthy competition.
While acknowledging Governor Dapo Abiodun’s resolve to drive the sector to enviable position, Oguntola identified perennial glut; high cost of production; multiple taxation and levies; bureaucratic hurdles in perfecting titles and getting necessary government approvals like Certificate of Occupancy, environmental impact assessment permit and smuggling of poultry products as challenges confronting poultry farmers in the state.
“The Governor has shown commitment towards achieving this in a recent town hall meeting with farmers, which comprise various commodity groups. In his response he promised to look into these areas, especially in the area of collaborating with other states by introducing an egg a day in the School Feeding Program.
“Closely following that is the Private Public Partnership to set up an egg powder processing plant as we are the largest producers of egg in the country. We will work in partnership with the state government. We are willing to work closely with the government in actualising the Schools Feeding Program and establishing egg powdering plant within the shortest possible period,” he said.
