Alumni urge Amosun, ASUU to resolve OOU impasse

In view of the ongoing strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State chapter, over the alleged non-payment of outstanding salaries/ allowances, the Central Executive Council, OOU Alumni Association, has appealed to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, to use resolve the crisis in the interest of students.

In a statement made available to The Guardian, and signed by the association’s president, Afolabi Sorunke, the group also appealed to the striking lecturers to embrace dialogue and peace.

They pleaded for understanding and amicable resolution on both sides in the overall interest of all stakeholders in the university.

Titled “A Plea for Quick and Amicable Resolution,” the statement read, “We are concerned about the suspension of academic activities at our alma mater over alleged non-payment of outstanding salaries/allowances by the state government. Our concern is further heightened by the statement credited to the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, who categorically denied that the state government was not in any ways indebted to the striking lecturers.

“So much efforts have been put over the years to ensure stability of programmes and academic calendars of the university which is already yielding good results, thus no effort should be spared in sustaining these achievements.
“We therefore appeal to all parties to shed grandstanding and embrace dialogue. We particularly appeal to Amosun to set in motion, machineries to look into the issues raised with a view to resolving whatever difference therein.
