Ambode pledges 6000-capacity hostel for LASU students

In his address, governor Ambode who lauded the peaceful atmosphere on campus assured that his administration would continue to invest in the institution and upgrade its status to what is obtainable in the world.

As institution honours Okebukola, Alakija, Adebutu

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state has disclosed that his administration is set to build a 6000- bed hostel for students of the state-owned university through a public-private partnership arrangement.

This was one of the major highlights at the institution’s 21st convocation ceremony and Founders Day where three eminent Nigerians, Prof Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary, National University Commission (NUC), Mrs Folorunso Alakija, Oil and Gas magnate and kessignton Adebutu, seasoned business tycoon were honoured.

Okebukola was honoured as a distinguished professor while Mrs Alakija and Adebutu were given special honourary degree. A total of 28,433 graduands were churned out at the ceremony which was attended by royal fathers led by Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, vice chancellors of other institutions and eminent personalities.

In his address, governor Ambode who lauded the peaceful atmosphere on campus assured that his administration would continue to invest in the institution and upgrade its status to what is obtainable in the world.

“At the last convocation, I made a commitment that our government would invest massively in LASU provided all stakeholders ensure that peace reigns on the campus. I am very pleased with the peaceful atmosphere in the institution and one of the results is the accreditation of the School of Dentistry, the first state university to have that right now. We will continue to invest in critical and social infrastructure, we have many projects nearing completion and this legacy projects when completed will no doubt change the entire overview of the landscape of this campus.”

The governor also lauded the institution’s governing council and the vice chancellor, Prof Olanrewaju Fagbohun for their efforts and tasked them to ensure that LASU is counted among the best five in the country by 2020 and the preferred university of choice by 2023.

Ambode called on the undergraduate students to avail themselves of the 13 weeks training programme tagged, “Ready Set Work” organised for final year students, saying it would boost their chances in the employment market.

“This initiative is aimed at raising future world class entrepreneurs and captains of industry from among our students. The vice chancellor announced plans by the university to launch its Distance Learning and Research Educational Centre, which would put the institution on the path of sustainability.

Prof Fagbohun commended the governor for his support and appealed to well meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of the institution in tackling the challenges of equipping laboratories, renovation of staff quarters as well as refurbishment of obsolete equipment and facilities.
