To effectively guide the 53 Nigerians selected to study in United Kingdom under Chevening scholarship for 2018/2019, British High Commission and a non-governmental organisation, Edusko recently held a pre-departure orientation programme for the scholars in Lagos, even as they were urged to be good ambassadors.

The British Deputy High commissioner to Nigeria, Laure Beaufils who was represented by Director, Department of International Trade, West Africa, Kate Rudd, stated that over 6,000 applications were received, out of which 53 were selected.

This year has a 39.6 percent woman representation compared to 33 percent from the previous year. Five persons with disabilities were also included, as against only one known scholar with a disability from 1984-2017.

‘There is no doubt that this group of Nigerians represent some of the brightest minds who will be empowered to lead development actions across various areas of the Nigeria’s economy and even globally. I charge you to aim for excellence in your studies, be great ambassadors of Nigeria to the UK, and most importantly, leverage on the networking, knowledge and cultural exchange opportunities this platform will present to you. She added that applications for 2018/2019 Chevening cycle is now open and will close on November 6.

In his remarks, founder, Edusko Africa, Jide Ayegbusi said ‘the primary objective of the event was to celebrate young Nigerians who have been given scholarships to study in top UK Universities.

“Every year, more than 10,000 Nigerians are admitted into universities in the UK for undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. This year, we are partnering with the British High Commission in Nigeria and Chevening Nigeria to host the first unified reception for scholars who are recipients of the prestigious scholarships.”

Speaking on behalf of participating universities, Senior International Officer at the University of Sussex, Tosin Adebisi, said, “I am delighted by this joined-up approach that does not only serve to celebrate these remarkable scholars but also to promote study in the UK and showcase the range of scholarships offered by universities and the foreign commonwealth office, thereby countering misconceptions about the limited scholarships available in the UK”.
