Aiming to harness technological innovations to drive global impact and nurture exceptional talent in information technology, the Community Innovation Hub in Abesan, Alimosho, recently hosted the debut edition of the NASA Space Apps Challenge, bringing together some of Nigeria’s brightest minds for an intensive global hackathon. The event served as a platform for space-related innovations, leveraging NASA’s open data to tackle pressing global challenges.
STEM Education Advocate and Center Manager, the Community Innovation Hub, Mr. Adewale Oseni emphasized the significance of the NASA Space Apps Challenge in equipping Nigerian youth with the tools and opportunities to innovate globally: “This initiative isn’t just about solving space-related challenges; it’s about empowering young Nigerians to compete, collaborate, and lead in the global tech space,” he stated.
The challenge culminated in a grand finale on showcasing groundbreaking projects and exceptional talent, where the top teams were recognized for their outstanding contributions. Participants dedicated 48 hours to developing cutting-edge solutions in critical areas such as climate change, space exploration, and sustainability. Despite the challenges of the hackathon, five resilient teams emerged with exceptional projects, demonstrating the ingenuity and technical prowess of Nigerian innovators.
The panel of judges, included notable figures such as Senior Business Program Manager, Microsoft, Yemi Orimolade and Team Lead, Cedar STEM and Entrepreneurship Hub, Lagos, Dr. Samuel Jackson, who shared valuable insights on fostering innovation and nurturing talent in underserved communities.
At the end of a keenly contested match-up, Team GG Galaxy emerged victorious with their immersive game design aimed at enhancing astronaut well-being and adaptability in microgravity. Team Cosmic Genesis finished as runners up with a virtual reality application enabling users to explore exoplanets, and Team Shapely rounded off the podium spots with their GIS mapping tool designed to help entrepreneurs identify optimal business locations.
The top three teams were awarded high-end gaming laptops, generously sponsored by HP Nigeria, the event’s Gold Partner. These prizes not only recognized their achievements but also provided them with the necessary tools to continue their journey in innovation.
