Two hundred youths and women selected across geo-political zones have been trained in fishery breeding, production and value addition, as well as packaging and marketing as part of the government efforts to reduce employment through agriculture.

The training programme was undertaken by the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT), Ibadan, in collaboration with a consultant.

Mr Olufemi Banjoko, who is the Director of Vocational Training in the college, commended the Federal Ministry of Agriculture for providing the resources for the college to carry out its mandate of training as many Nigerians as possible to generate employment through the sector.

Provost of the college, Dr Olufunmilayo Adejinmi, said empowerment kits to each of the trainees included 100 fingerlings of catfish, 50kg feeds, and transportation allowances.

She urged the participants to utilize the empowerment kits for an agribusiness that has the potentialities to engage them and other employees if managed well as they were trained, saying the college would continue to guide them after the capacity building.

One of the participants said she has facilities in her parents’ backyard to produce catfish, and would like to add value by smoking the fish with kilns.
