NCMM recognises Yoruba Wikimedians for cultural documentation work

The National Commission for Museums and Monuments has recognised the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group for its role in documenting and promoting Yoruba heritage during the 2025 Yoruba Ancestral Day held in Ibadan.

The award was presented by the Curator of the National Museum of Unity, Ibadan, Oriyomi Pamela Otuka, who noted that the group had spent years contributing to the preservation and digital visibility of Yoruba history and culture through Wikimedia platforms, including the Yoruba Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
Receiving the award on behalf of the group, the President of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, Mr Mikaeel Sodiq, expressed appreciation and restated the group’s commitment to cultural preservation.

“This honour inspires us to continue our mission of documenting Yoruba history, language, and traditions so that future generations—both within and outside Nigeria—can access accurate and freely available information,” he said.
The organisation has undertaken projects such as oral history documentation, digital heritage work, content drives, photo campaigns, and community outreach, aimed at expanding Yoruba cultural representation online.

The recognition signals continued collaboration between cultural institutions and digital knowledge communities.
The group also extended appreciation to the organisers of Yoruba Ancestral Day 2025, the NCMM, and members of the Yoruba community for their support.
