TO improve reading culture among students and Nigerian youths, some lecturers at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have suggested electronic-learning as a way out.

A senior lecturer, Dr. Carol Umebese, who decried poor reading culture among Nigerian students, lamented that the advent of social media has contributed immensely to the general decline in reading habit among youths.

Speaking with The Guardian shortly after the launch of her book titled, “Activate God’s Promises in Your life,” Umebese said since contemporary youths are always online with their devices, efforts should be made to instill e-learning habit in students by uploading notebooks on the school’s website.

Said the author, “I believe we can improve the reading culture by shifting our emphasis from reading of hard books to e-books. Good books, novels and lecture notes should be uploaded on websites that are easily accessible to students so they can read on-the-go. At UNILAG, we are inculcating e-learning habit in our students. Our lecture notes are uploaded on our website for our students.”

For Dr. Olusola Sonubi, another lecturer, students who find it difficult to carry books around could easily download their lecture notes and other books on their handheld devices including iPhones and iPads for easy learning.

While commenting on the book, she encouraged everyone to grab a copy for their reading pleasure, as it would change lives and ultimately impact on the society.

Umebese, the author described the book as a “must-read for all. It will teach and inform people globally that as covenant children, the terms of the covenant that Jesus sealed with His blood, involves the gift of righteousness and abundant grace (unmerited, undeserved and unearned favour).
